There are many old cemeteries especially in Southern Maryland. “All Saints Episopal Church” in Owings Maryland, is one of the oldest churches in Southern Maryland. This church was established in 1692, but the church building it self only dates from 1774. Calvert County was originally established by catholics, but there aren’t any Catholic churches that remain around this period, or were ever built at this time.
We were exploring the graveyard to update the records that the church had given the Historical Society. The records that were given to us haven’t been updated since the 1970’s to the 1980’s. Therefore it needed to be updated.
In this cemetery there were many graves of men who fought during WWI and WWII. There were also many graves that dated back from 1850’s to 1920’s of children who died between the ages of 1 month to 7 yrs of age. There was only one grave found that dated to the 1700’s but there were a few that dated between 1882-1886. This is one of many old graveyards in Southern Maryland that date way back.
The photo to the right is an example of one of the child graves we found. In order to preserve graveyards many churches & cemeteries need the publics help in order to cut the grass around the markers and update information. This is one of many projects that the Historical Society and other nonprofit organizations are working on.
