We graduated from college in February 2008, so our family decided to celebrate by going on a trip. In the past we wanted to go to Europe, but felt that it was too expensive considering we just both graduated from college. We decided to take the drive down south to Charleston, SC, and Savannah, GA for a week.
Left very early in the morning on April 19th, and came back home on April 26h. Here is a photo summary of our trip. Be sure to visit reenactorsnetwork.com to view more photos of our vacation. We stopped by Charlestown
Landing, which was the first settlement before the actual city of Charleston was established. Unlike the settlers of Plymouth Mass, these settlers were going to the new world for personal wealth (get rich), not for religious freedom.
Took a lot of pictures of this place, Charleston Landing was not only a historic site, but it had its own little zoo for kids to explore. There was also a little white house on the property, and alligators swimming in the water. This wasn’t our first time in Charleston, SC. So we skipped touring the mansions and such, and just explored the city. We found some hidden treasures we didn’t see the first time we visited Charleston.
After touring Charleston, we took a long or short drive to Savannah GA. We walked around the city and found some pretty neat pubs. We at least saw 3 or 4 different pubs. All the pubs had the average outside look to them, and we promised ourselves that we would eat at one of them sometime during our trip. We explored the Art Gallery/store of the Institute of Art.
We saw most of the squares, and believe us when we say there are a lot of squares in Savannah Georgia. That is what makes Savannah Georgia very different from any other city is its squares. Even Washington D.C doesn’t have as many squares as we saw during our trip to Savannah.
If we didn’t see any kind of monument or go inside a grave yard one point during our trip, than its a trip not worth remembering. We at least go to one graveyard every trip. It used to not be our thing but as we’ve traveled it ends up being something we end up doing. We not only went into a grave yard in Savannah but we also explored a cemetery in Charleston SC.
We missed touring Fort Sumter while going to Charleston, SC, so we figured we would at least visit one other fort during our trip. The fort we decided to explore during this trip ended up being Fort Pulaski, and it is also surrounded by water. We also went to another fort during our trip but it was a Revolutionary fort. So we got to explore two time periods in American History instead of focusing in one time period. Like the other forts that we have explored in years past this fort also had its dark and scary parts. We should mention the weekend before we went on our trip they had a living history event at this fort, so we missed it by one weekend.
Before concluding our trip we should mention we did a lot more than what it appears. We visited a few random places, but you can view the pics on our website. Before heading home, we decided to stop by Fort Frederick, Maryland, for their annual Colonial Fair. So we actually visited three different forts and all within different time periods.
There were a lot of sutlers at this Colonial Fair, and great resources to put on our website. Once we got home we updated our sutlers list, and ended up gaining more 18th century sutlers than 19th century. One of our goals for next year is to at least go to one big Revolutionary, 1812 War, and Civil War event next year.
